Thompson Falls Montana town photo Established in 1905, Sanders County is located in Northwest Montana about 100 miles northwest of Missoula, Montana, and is bordered by Idaho's panhandle. With approximately 10,000 residents, Sanders County is Montana's 22nd most populous county.

The centrally located county seat is Thompson Falls, the largest community, and along with Plains and Trout Creek, these quaint towns offer a variety of businesses and services, more than adequate for a county of this size. The temperatures in Sanders County are relatively mild year round, with four distinct seasons. Summer temperatures are commonly in the 90's, with the average daytime temperature being in the mid 80's. Winter daytime temperatures hover around 32 degrees, and can dip roughly 10-15 degrees cooler at night. In the protection of the mountain ranges, the valleys within the county receive less severe temperatures & wind than the plains areas east of the Continental Divide. Snowfall usually does not exceed 6-10 inches on the ground at any one time. Heavier snowfalls however, may be expected at higher elevation, making for great snowmobiling and cross country skiing.

The Clark Fork River, runs the length of the valley, and lends itself to water sports via three reservoirs open to the public. Sanders County encompasses the Cabinet Mountain Wilderness area, as well as three National Forests. Land available for hunting and other public use is virtually unlimited.

The three national forests surrounding Sanders County provide over 4,200,000 acres of some of the best big game habitat in the country! Whitetailed deer, mule deer, moose, elk, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, bear, and mountain lion, as well as wild turkey and many species of grouse are plentiful in Sanders County.

Within close proximity are Glacier National Park, Flathead Lake, and Lake Pend Orielle. This quiet portion of Montana with its lush green valleys, rugged mountains, lakes, and streams offer a lifestyle of tranquility away from the centers of large industry, congestion and pollution.
