Elk hunting1Bullseye Outfitting 2004 Archery Hunting Update

Greeting from Montana,

The 2004 archery season has just come to a close here at Bullseye Outfitting. The hunting was everything that we had expected. With bull elk populations at an all time high, the action was all we could hope for. The bulls were bugeling from opening day to the last day we were hunting. We took bulls on the first day of the season and right on into October. As all archers know, if destiny and luck is on your side, you will take the animal home. If luck goes toward the animal, your arrow will never reach its mark and the animal will be there another day. We were fortunate to have many hunters with luck on their side, although several didn't.

Wisconsin hunting partners Don Zachuck and Matt Woyak were hunting the opening week this year. Don took a nice 6 Elk hunting 2point bull last year on the first hunt and returned for some more action. Since Don's friend Matt hadn't been on an elk hunt before, Don was hoping Matt would get the first opportunity. Don's wish came true, when Matt connected on the first day of the season. Matt's bull was called in to 9 yards and that was all he needed. After Matt's elk was taken care of, we were hot after a bull for Don. On the third day we worked a bull for a couple of hours. He had a small group of cows with him, and it took some coaxing to get him into range. Once he decided to come, he came into range fast. At 25 yards, Don took his shot. The arrow entered the bull in the liver area. The bull moved off a short distance, but with a couple more calls from the guide, he came back. Don's second shot was at 10 yards, and was in the heart. Yes, these bulls get so worked up that they can be called back even after being hit. One bull was shot at 5 times in a 2 hour period this season.

Elk hunting 3After the first week, the weather took a turn for the worse. We received heavy rain and swirling winds. The bulls kept bugeling and we had good action. The trick was to get the bull close enough for a shot before the wind would change. Pennsylvania hunter Kervin Beachy was lucky enough to have his bull come in fast. Kervin's arrow hit it's mark and the bull went down before leaving sight. Clear skies finally made the hunting easier. Pat Harris arrived from the United Arab Emirants for his hunt. A New York Native, Pat was on his first hunt in Montana. On his first day of hunting, we worked our way into an area we had heard an elk a couple of days prior. When we got into the spot we hoped the elk were, we found three bulls bugeling. The first bull came so quickly, Pat barely had time to set up before he saw him. The bull came out broadside at 17 yards, and that was it for that bull. Pat watched the bull go down just in time to see a larger bull coming. He had no regrets though. You know the saying, a bull in the hand is better than two in the bush!

Elk hunting 4Bear hunting

We had an opening in our Fall schedule for some bear hunting. South Carolina Hunters Calvin White and Charley Andrews showed up in between hurricanes. They arrived in hopes of finding a couple of Montana cinnamon bears. After passing on some bear, they found what they wanted in the high country huckleberries. They connected within a few hours of each other, and got what they were looking for.

We have some good Spring Bear Hunts open for 2005. The bear population is very high in our area, and these are fun hunts. We are filling our 2005 full elk & deer hunts at this time also. If you are serious about hunting next Fall, now is the time to make your arrangements. We will be getting ready for our rifle hunts in the next couple of weeks and are looking forward to another good season!

Good Hunting!

Ben and Jeff
